# Feeling stuck

Same week, same pattern, same promise to yourself on Sunday night. You know roughly what would help. You are just not doing it, and you are tired of wondering why.

## Why can I not just make myself change?

Because the pattern is usually doing a job for you. Putting off the hard conversation protects you from how it might go. Staying in the job keeps you away from the risk of the next one. Scrolling at midnight buys an hour that belongs to nobody but you. Willpower tends to lose against a pattern that is quietly solving a problem.

That is why I care about the why. Not as an excuse, and not to spend months in the past, but because once you can see what a pattern is protecting, you can look for a better way to protect it.

## What if I do not know what I want?

Then that is where we start, and it is an honest place to start. Not knowing what you want can be a sign that you have spent a long time doing what was expected, needed, or safe. The question of what you would choose for yourself may not have come up in years.

We come at it from the edges: what drains you, what you envy in other lives, what you would stop doing tomorrow if nobody minded. The answers to those smaller questions tend to point somewhere, even while the big question is still open.

## What if the stuck part is one decision?

Sometimes it is a single choice you keep circling. Whether to stay in the relationship. Whether to take the job, leave the job, go back to school, move closer to family, stay in uniform or get out. Every option costs something, so the decision waits, and the waiting quietly becomes a decision of its own.

I will not make the decision for you. We slow it down, say out loud what each option would cost and what it would give, and separate the fears about the facts from the fears about change itself. Staying frozen has a cost too, and it deserves a place on the list.

## What will you actually do?

Work alongside you, honestly. This is a partnership, and I take my half of it seriously. I will encourage you, push when it helps, and when necessary say the thing that is useful rather than the thing that is comfortable. Accountability, the way I mean it, is about growth, not blame.

The idea underneath DBT, my primary method, fits this closely. Two things are true: the effort you are already making is real, and there is more available to you than this pattern allows. Being stuck often means one of those halves has gone missing, either the self acceptance or the push.

## How do we get moving?

With something small enough to start this week. One email sent. One evening a week given to the thing you keep postponing. One honest conversation scheduled instead of rehearsed. Small steps build evidence, and evidence is more convincing than any pep talk.

The goals get set together and kept specific and achievable, and we look honestly at what happened, including the weeks when the step did not get taken. Those weeks are information too. The aim is a life that feels like yours, chosen on purpose rather than drifted into.

## What stuck can look like

- Making the same promise to yourself every Sunday night
- Knowing the next step and somehow never taking it
- Feeling restless in a life that looks settled from the outside
- Waiting on a decision until a deadline makes it for you
- Staying busy every day and still feeling that nothing is moving

## Questions people ask

### How is this different from talking it over with a friend?

A friend loves you and has a stake in your choices, which can make it hard for them to say the uncomfortable thing or stay neutral about a big decision. I can do both. I also bring structure: goals, practical skills, and a way of checking progress that does not depend on how you happen to feel on a given day.

### What if I have been stuck for years?

Then the pattern has had a long time to settle in, and loosening it will take some patience. That is not a reason to leave it alone. A long-standing pattern often has a clear why behind it once we look, and seeing that why plainly is where a lot of movement begins.

### What if I get going and then stall again?

That is part of the work, not a failure of it. Progress tends to come in uneven steps, and a stalled week tells us something useful about what is still in the way. We look at it honestly, make the next goal smaller if the last one was too big, and keep going.
