Who I help

# People who are used to being the one who handles it.

I spent 27 years in the United States Army. I became a therapist because of what I saw there: a lot of people in the military, if we need help, they do not understand us in the civilian world. So we do not go get help.

## Do I have to have served to see you?

No. I work with veterans, military-connected families, and first responders, and I also work with anyone carrying something they should not be carrying alone.

What most of my clients have in common is not a uniform. It is a habit of being the steady one, and a sense that asking for help would let somebody down.

## Why does the background matter?

Because you can skip the part where you explain what a deployment does to a marriage, or what it is like to be responsible for people, or why you did not go to the appointment. I already know the shape of it.

That is not a shortcut to the work. It is a shortcut to being understood, which is usually what stands between someone and starting.
